There is an interesting discussion of it in Bill Warren's fantastic Keep Watching the Skies. I would love a discussion of possible Dramatic Presentation nominees.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-257559067333970126.post-9025123607214471932022-07-30T17:43:45.583-07:002022-07-30T17:43:45.583-07:00Thanks, Piet. And thanks for the catch on "Private Eye" -- it's been in my mind as a major story for so long I guess I just promoted it!Rich Hortonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07659613066689174738noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-257559067333970126.post-69502481463992620532022-07-30T16:53:16.077-07:002022-07-30T16:53:16.077-07:00I too am "fonder" of The Paradox Men (an...I too am "fonder" of The Paradox Men (and The Sword of Rhiannon) than 1984, but it's hard to deny that novel's importance -- and excellence. As for the Bradbury, "The Martian" in particular is a story that really works for me, and I had a sense that I couldn't deny Bradbury's overall brilliance versus one great Leiber story (not that Leiber didn't have other great stories each year) twice in a row.Rich Hortonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07659613066689174738noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-257559067333970126.post-62958665684640451862022-07-30T12:41:13.341-07:002022-07-30T12:41:13.341-07:00Two short stories worthy of consideration are &quo...Two short stories worthy of consideration are "Our Fair City" by Heinlein, which made the 1998 Fantasy Hall of Fame, so it was based on a SFWA vote, and perhaps "Come and Go Mad", by Fredric Brown, which was in Terry Carr's Treasury of Modern Fantasy (with Marty Greenberg), and also in The Arbor House Treasury of Horror and the Supernatural (Pronzini & Malzberg). "Private Eye" wasn't in the SF Hall of Fame, by the way.Piet Nelhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10800281551560734226noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-257559067333970126.post-57990918936540575702022-07-30T11:53:51.120-07:002022-07-30T11:53:51.120-07:00For some reason, my comment went in as Anon above....For some reason, my comment went in as Anon above.Todd Masonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18104399586348314594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-257559067333970126.post-52149011877636468852022-07-30T11:52:56.822-07:002022-07-30T11:52:56.822-07:00I'll second Joaechim's suggestion that the...I'll second Joaechim's suggestion that the Leiber is better than all the Bradburys (again, for me), and am surprised you put "The Exiles" in the leading pack rather than the secondary, even after Boucher's very much improving revisions (see THE EUREKA YEARS for details). And while THE PARADOX MEN isn't superior to 1984, I remain fonder of it (and the Signet, I believe it was, sexed-up 1984 cover is more goofily lurid than nearly any pulp cover that comes to mind, at very least as an example of packaging).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-257559067333970126.post-65220096348073767362022-07-30T09:25:33.218-07:002022-07-30T09:25:33.218-07:00I'm not convinced that the Bradbury is better ...I'm not convinced that the Bradbury is better than the Leiber... That said I read the Bradbury so long ago that my memory is a bit shady -- obfuscated by Martian dust? Venusian rain? hah.

Judith Merril's "Death is the Penalty" (1949) isn't half bad either although not to the level of the others.Joachim Boazhttps://sciencefictionruminations.com/noreply@blogger.com
