I read it after becoming intoxicated with Dickens, and Thackeray's "flavor" is so different from CD that the book didn't go down very well at all. I've read a lot more widely in the Victorians since then (Elliot, Collins, Browning, Trollope - who has probably given me more pleasure than any writer I've ever read) and I've often thought that I would do better with Thackeray now.
